Many websites out there exist without a particular reason. Their authors just wanted to make use of their beginner level HTML skills to write out their name, marquee other details about themselves, and post a picture of their pet dog over a background image of their living room or house. Website ideas are more than just getting the urge to create a website. A website’s objective is what makes a website unique, so the idea behind it should be able to survive the insanity the World Wide Web is.

Any website ideas yet? Well, let’s start from the beginning.

Why are you making a website in the first place?

Is it going to be for personal use like a blog or portfolio?
Would it be for internet affiliate marketing?
Would the website represent a business venture or—like many other online businesses out there—will it be the business itself?

Knowing the objective of the website influences its design, like how its feel should be, how its fonts and colors are going to be arranged, and other stuff like that. But then again there may be other website ideas you can try. Like adding different functionalities on an already existing website.

Membership and an online forum can definitely make your website’s traffic go up. If your site doesn’t offer membership and such, you can consider it and think if it would be beneficial or not. Email newsletters can also be an option. Have links to similar sites and form a sort of link network that enables the proponents of the network to ‘share’ visitors between them. Overhaul the look of your website whenever you feel like it’s getting old. The new look would refresh patrons and can encourage the participation of new ones. Update and upgrade functionalities like an advanced search engine instead of a basic one, animated links, and tabbed browsing within a single page.

There are a lot of other website ideas you can try for your site, but before putting them into practice, always think if it would somehow affect your site negatively. If there are different opinions, try to balance it out and see if the good sides outweigh the bad points.
